Linux Environment on Chromebook
Modern Chromebooks include a Linux development environment that runs inside a container.
This container is based on Debian and allows users to install standard Linux software.
With this feature enabled, a Chromebook can behave like a small Linux workstation for development tasks.
Python on Chromebook
The programming language Python works very well inside the Chromebook Linux container.
Python can be installed using the standard Linux package manager:
The Terminal:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install python3
After installation, Python can be started from the terminal:
python3
This makes it possible to run scripts, experiments and small development projects.
Python Development on Chromebook
Chromebooks can run Linux applications through the built-in Linux development environment in ChromeOS.
This feature allows developers to install and run many traditional Linux tools directly on a Chromebook.
In my experiments at RWB Tech Lab, I sometimes explore how lightweight development environments can be used for programming and testing ideas.
Development Tools
Several lightweight development tools work well inside the Chromebook Linux container.
Examples include:
- Python – programming language used in many experiments
- Geany – lightweight code editor
- Thonny – beginner-friendly Python IDE
- LibreOffice – office suite available for Linux
These tools allow developers to create scripts, test ideas and work with data.

Conclusion
